IFAB re-accred­it­ed to revised ISO/IEC 17025:2018-03!

IFAB was re-accred­it­ed accord­ing to the revised ISO/IEC 17025:2018-03 for the proof of the effec­tive­ness of water-based fire fight­ing sys­tems by fire tests for rolling stock (rail vehi­cles), indus­tri­al plants, pub­lic places, store rooms, engine and machin­ery spaces, tun­nel- and trans­port infra­struc­ture sys­tems as well as high-volt­age bat­ter­ies and the exper­i­men­tal deter­mi­na­tion of design fire sce­nar­ios by full scale fire tests:

Hot Smoke tests in a school in Wet­zlar

In a new build­ing of the Goethe-Schule in Wet­zlar IFAB has car­ried out hot smoke tests to val­i­date the flaw­less func­tion­al­i­ty of the installed fire detec­tion sys­tem.  The tests became nec­es­sary because some of the smoke detec­tors installed in the ceil­ing were par­tial­ly cov­ered by new­ly sus­pend­ed ceil­ings.

Fire tests for N2 Glob­al

IFAB has car­ried out for and togeth­er with N2 Glob­al a series of fire tests using var­i­ous N2 Glob­al fire extin­guish­ing sys­tems. Nitro­gen was used as the extin­guish­ing agent. The test sce­nar­ios were devel­oped and imple­ment­ed in close col­lab­o­ra­tion with N2 Glob­al.

Fire tests accord­ing to ARGE part II:2018 und UNI 11565:2016

IFAB has car­ried out fire tests for one of the lead­ing water mist man­u­fac­tur­ers accord­ing to ARGE part II:2018 and UNI 11565:2016. High pres­sure water mist sys­tems were test­ed in order to approve its effi­cien­cy in pas­sen­ger areas for rolling stock. IFAB is specif­i­cal­ly accred­it­ed for the appli­ca­tion of such guide­lines in fire tests.


In 2019, IFAB car­ried out fire safe­ty con­cepts for new and refit­ted parts of rolling stock, guide­line for an entire vehi­cle and func­tion­al assess­ments accord­ing to ARGE part 1 (by FDS) and part 2 (by fire tests).
Fur­ther con­tracts in 2020 are indi­cat­ing the increas­ing demand for fire safe­ty in rolling stock and IFAB’s rep­u­ta­tion in this field.


IFAB was con­tract­ed by a water mist man­u­fac­tur­er to car­ry out fire tests for both a VDS and a FM approval accord­ing to FM 5560 Appen­dix E Machin­ery Space. Fire tests were con­duct­ed suc­cess­ful­ly togeth­er with RISE lab­o­ra­to­ries in Nor­way.


In 2019, a few large fire test series were car­ried out in order to deter­mine fire safe­ty mea­sures of Lithi­um-Ion bat­ter­ies with­in the scope of a research project SUVEREN. Test series with trac­tion bat­ter­ies, wood­en design fire loads and with CNG jet fires, with/ with­out fire­fight­ing of dif­fer­ent agents were con­duct­ed in our test lab. The fire behav­iour of bat­tery ref­er­ence and design fire loads of iso­lat­ed NEC and of the entire vehi­cle with/ with­out fire­fight­ing tech­nolo­gies were inves­ti­gat­ed. Dif­fer­ent mea­sure­ment meth­ods for the deter­mi­na­tion of bat­tery fires were imple­ment­ed dur­ing the fire tests of Lithi­um-Ion bat­tery fire safe­ty (gas analy­ses and dif­fer­ent meth­ods for HRR deter­mi­na­tion).

IFAB final­ized the first stage of fire safe­ty design for the Vir­gin Hyper­loop One

IFAB was con­tract­ed for all fire safe­ty designs for the first stage of the project. This includ­ed the POD design, tubes and relat­ed emer­gency infra­struc­ture. The project was very com­pre­hen­sive includ­ing the spec­i­fi­ca­tion of suit­able design stan­dards, fire risk analy­sis, fire safe­ty con­cepts and ventilation/evacuation stud­ies.

Car bat­tery fire resis­tance ser­vices from IFAB

IFAB has extend­ed its ser­vices to the auto­mo­bile indus­try by being able to car­ry out fire resis­tance tests of car bat­ter­ies accord­ing to:

• GB/T 31467.3, Lithi­um-ion trac­tion bat­tery pack and sys­tem for elec­tric vehi­cles – Part 3: Safe­ty require­ments and test meth­ods

• E/ECE/324/Rev.2/Add.99/Rev.2, Annex 8E, Fire Resis­tance.
